DNA analysis using living relatives of Nicholas and Alexandra's parents confirmed that this was indeed the final resting place of the Romanovs. After the investigation, the remains were buried in St. Petersburg cathedral and the Romanovs were declared saints in the Russian Orthodox church.
In 2008 it was determined that remains found the previous year near where most of the Romanov family was found belonged to Alexis. The royal family has been sainted by The Russian Synod Abroad as well as The Moscow Patriarchate.
It houses 47 tombstones and 2 reliquaries of the dynastic necropolis of Moscow Great Princes and Tsars: Ivan Kalita, Dmitry Donskoy, Ivan III, Ivan the Terrible, tsarevich Dmitriy, Tsars Mikhael and Alexei Romanov were buried here.

Alexei Nikolaevich was born on 12 August 1904 in Peterhof Palace, St. Petersburg Governorate as the heir apparent to the throne. His father, Nicholas II of Russia, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March 1917.

The bodies of Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, and three of their daughters were discovered in 1979. Remains of two of the children, believed to be Maria and Alexei, were missing from the unmarked grave. The discovery of the Romanov remains was not acknowledged by the government until 1989 during the glasnost period.
